  Johns Brook Lodge is an excellent base for hike up Mt. Marcy (highest point in NY State), though on the trail I've heard its not the easiest approach. I stayed in the lodge once and in a lean too further up the trail toward Marcy once. The lodge is rustic, comfortable, and when I was there (late september) there was a nice kitchen for your packed-in food! The second time around I found the on-line reservation system not working and opted for a chance at a spot in one of the lean-toos; I spent a wonderful evening with two other hikers in the new, well-maintained lean-too. Overall excellent trails, Lodge, and hike up Marcy! The easy level hike from Keene Valley to the Lodge turns moderately difficult, rocky, wet (both years I hiked it) and steep from the Lodge to summit. Well worth it if you like the DAKS or want to see what the Great North Woods are like!! There is limited paid parking at the trailhead at the end of Johns Brook Lane so get there early.
